The first day of hunting season should be incredibly exciting, but if you’re not properly prepared it can turn into a frustrating and unsuccessful letdown. A little preparation can make all the difference when it comes to how much fun you have in the field, as well as how much game you bring home. Preparing for hunting season can be half the fun. The following last second tune-ups ensure you’re prepared, but even better, they get you excited for hunting season as you pack your blind bag and clean decoys.
1. It All Starts with a Little Visualization
Look through old photos or videos of past hunts to get you in the moment thinking through everything you need to enjoy a successful hunting season. What do you need for a great day out in the field? This is the perfect opportunity to make a list of things you think of, including things you need to find, fix, organize or buy before the big day.
Now that you’re in the right mindset…
2. Don’t Forget Your Duck Stamp
First and foremost, you’ll need your license and a copy of the regulations for the state you’re hunting in. Your key to legally hunting migratory waterfowl like ducks and geese is The Federal Duck Stamp. Make sure you have it before hunting season is set to start. Your stamp must be on you while you’re hunting, either printed out or downloaded on your mobile device.
3. Get the Decoys Ready
Drag out your decoys and clean them up as needed before hunting season. Decoys are made to look like the real thing—that means there shouldn’t be mud left caked on geese heads from last season. Additionally, each field decoy needs the correct base matched and secured. If base and decoy are mismatched, it’ll create an off-putting appearance.
Water decoys must be ready to hit the water with untangled cords and a weight attached. Untangling the cord can take far longer than expected, so whatever you do, don’t wait until the morning you’re set to go hunting to start untangling.
4. Prepare Your Hunting Blind
Blinds are going to need attention pre-hunting season. New blinds must be properly set up and mudded up. Blinds that have been in storage or sat unused are almost always covered in spiders, a few stray bullets, dirt, and trash, all of which needs to get cleaned up. While you’re busy cleaning, lookout for holes that need to be patched. From there, blinds need to be brushed and camouflaged with “local colors” so that they blend in with surroundings.
5. Check Your Gun
Your gun is everything out in the field so test it out ahead of time to ensure it’s in proper working order. Now is your chance to clean the gun and check the chokes and plug, as well as stock up on bullets.
6. Check Your Truck
The truck is one of the most commonly neglected necessities pre-hunting season. Your truck should be freshly oiled up and inspected, and don’t forget to fill it up with gas. Just imagine all the time you’ll waste if something goes wrong with your truck. There’s no need to risk it when all you want to do is get to hunting.
7. Prepare Your Blind Bag
Bust out your blind bag and start filling it up with necessities like…
- Freshly cleaned calls
- Toilet paper
- Multitool (you never know what you might need it for)
- Shotgun Bore Snake
- Aspirin (or any other medications you or your dog might need out in the field)
- Wader patches
- Head lamp
- Spare gun plug
- Extra dog whistle
- First aid kit for you and your pup
- Fresh pairs of gloves and socks
- Choke tube tool
- Shotgun shells
- Batteries in case you need a fresh set for your head lamp or other accessories
- Oh, and don’t forget your thermos filled with plenty of black coffee!
