Batteries and Classifications
Let’s face it. Without a good battery, you are going nowhere, typically when you need it most. So, invest in a good battery and support it for best performance, such as Deep Cycle (DC) Marine batteries.
There is some debate about what battery works best, but most buyers view a heavy duty or DC marine battery as a good choice. You will want the battery measurements to be slightly less than the compartment you will place it in. Do not forget to brace the battery into place with a small 2×4 piece of wood or other support. This ensures the battery does not move around, even in heavy weather, should a storm suddenly appear. Also make sure that it is sealed away from any water access.
Fully charge your battery every single time before you place it in the compartment. There is nothing worse than being far away from the dock, and your battery, suddenly, will not start, and you are miles away from your starting point. Kayak Motor: Three Battery Classifications
The Wet or Flooded Lead Acid (FLA) battery can work well, so long as you know how to conduct a regular maintenance program on it. These batteries, when properly cared for, can run for two years. When the water level is low, refill with distilled water only, not regular water. Use a charging system that is specifically for FLA batteries.

These are not as commonly sold but check around to see if there is one you like that fits your needs.
The last basic piece of information you need to understand when buying a battery for a kayak motor is what amps the battery discharges over a specified period, also known as amp-hour rating (AHR). On a battery label, you will see this as AH or aH. The calculation here would be that if a battery states it is a 35AH, as in the battery example link shown above, then the battery produces 2 amps for 17.5 hours, 4 amps for 8.75 hours, 7 amps for 5 hours, and so on. Added weight in the boat can change those amp-expended numbers significantly as well.
When you calculate the number of amps you expect to be discharged during a routine run, you divide that number into the AH shown on your battery. If you have a kayak that is 16-foot long or less, then a 12V 35AH battery (i.e. 2 amps for 17.5 hours) should work fine. For longer boats, you will need a 24V battery with a higher AHR. The importance of installing this is that while trolling along on shallow rivers or at the edges of a lake, your propeller might hit an unseen rock below. The circuit breaker’s job is to cut off the power so that no further damage is done to the propeller and to electrical components that suddenly struggle harder to continue moving parts, when it should not. Once you have struck a rock, fishing lines, or other objects, you want to clear the propeller and shaft from further damage or entanglement, before resetting the circuit breaker and starting the motor again. This trolling motor currently maintains five-stars. Again, the Newport Vessels company gives great customer service whenever there is an issue, such as a propeller falling off. It was replaced quickly at no cost to the customer. The thrust and speed are considered excellent with this motor. As with all the other Newport Vessels trolling motors, these are constructed to be very quiet while in use.
You must have a kayak or board with a removable fin underneath, so you can slide the motor into the fin mount. Do not try to alter your kayak yourself if you do not have a removable fin and mount setup already in place. Your motor will slide into the fin mount, moving from the front of the boat to the back. The blue part faces towards the end of your boat (or SUP board) and the reality is that you cannot slide it in any other way.
This is a fun addition to the family of boat motors. While on the more expensive side of trolling motors, the Aqua Marina BlueDrive electric SUP motor is designed for installation on the bottom of your Aqua Marina kayak or SUP paddle board. This motor is a fan-favorite because of how it runs crafts. For boats without a fin box, you can get an NRS Fin Replacement Plate which is sometimes sold on Amazon, or you can find it elsewhere. Logically, you must have a flat-bottom base to have it attached. Have a professional do this for you to make sure it will not come loose. You can find a blow-up picture of this replacement plate, with measurements, at the bottom of the motor’s product sales page on Amazon (click the title link).
The cable from the power fin to the white battery case is 34 inches long. It does limit where you can place the battery case because of the short length. You can contact the manufacturer to see if they have a longer cord now.
Another comment made is that the manual is translated from Chinese and sometimes you may have to weed through poorly translated sentences to understand what you need to know. If in doubt, check the Amazon comments or Q & A section to see if your answer is already posted from someone else.
After every lake or river outing, and particularly if you run your motor in saltwater, always wash down your motor after you get home. Once you get your boat or kayak on a trailer, or if you remove the motor and stick your kayak on top of your vehicle, the air passing over motor and boat will dry any salt that remains. Therefore, it is essential to get that salt residue off. You should always wash your trailer, if immersed in salt water, as well as the boat and your motor. Use soapy water to cut through grime and salt. Use a soft sponge for your kayak and motor.
Check your motor, shaft, and propeller for any obstacles that may be entangled in or around the motor, shaft, and blades, such as weeds and fishing lines. Take care in removing them. This is especially important if the blades are encased in a housing unit, such as the Aqua Marina motor mentioned in this post. Make sure you wash all the motor parts, including the shaft, and add a coat of silicon spray to the shaft so it is still easy to adjust up and down. After application, wipe the shaft dry with a cloth.

Trolling motor magnets are apparently hard and brittle, and easy to chip. If one begins chipping, it can get into the motor and cause havoc. Why take a chance on having this happen?!
One suggestion is to store it in the basement, if you have one, or maybe off to the side in the cloak room by the door, or even the laundry room. Keep it covered/wrapped to avoid the motor and other parts from collecting any dust and lint if you do store it there.

In this last section, we will look at how to store your battery over the off season. Depending on where you live and what climate you have, some boaters like to continue using their boats right up to when the first freeze shows up. For others, it is time to put everything up until the first thaw of early Spring.

Some batteries have small draws on them over time, and this may lead to a fully discharged battery. If it freezes in that discharged condition, it can ruin your battery and you will need a new one for your next boating season. Whenever you get ready to go out, always consider possible scenarios where you can get into trouble and need something, particularly when you do not have it. Always have a flashlight or two, with an extra set of batteries, all stored in plastic waterproof bags. You may need them to shine your light at an upcoming boat, while evening has arrived, and you need for them to see you. Preferably, you will be back at your landing spot before night moves in.
Consider that while you should be wearing your life jacket, bring another one in case you come across an overturned boat or some other accident and the person needs to ride back in your boat or kayak. Accordingly, also have a medical kit handy, stashed in a plastic bag. This kit should hold Band-Aids, medical tape, folding scissors or folded jackknife with scissor accessory, matches, sewing kit (needles), medical cream, and large gauze pads for cleaning and packing wounds. Even if you cannot stitch a wound shut, you can close the wound by pulling the tape across for temporary measures. Bring strips of materials that can also act as a tourniquet. You just never know what you will come across while out on your journey.
Bring plenty of water, your sunglasses with an attached strap so you do not lose them, a baseball cap to shade your eyes, and whatever else you need to be comfortable and safe. You can bring your cell phone, but put it in a clear baggie, so water does not get in it or on it. You can still access the screen if you lightly stretch the plastic across. If you need to, bring a very small fully-charged portable charger, just in case you are out longer than you planned on, and need to contact someone with your phone. Keep the charger in a waterproof bag too.
Wear comfortable clothes while out, based on what the temperature is at the time you go out, and what it may be when you get back in. Always keep a fresh set of clothes and a jacket in your car so you have something to change in to when you get back. And most importantly, have fun!
